Hi friends, now that the warmth of summer is upon us, it’s the perfect time to connect with nature and allow its healing energy to inspire our practice. This season is perfect for embracing the beauty and tranquility of all that outdoors has to offer. It’s a time for deepening our oneness with nature, while relaxing and enhancing our well-being.

Spending time outdoors is a powerful way to regulate and rejuvenate our mind and body. The long hours of sunlight, fresh air and colorful landscape all come together to create a calm setting that invites relaxation and healing. There is a sacredness in pausing our hectic schedules and inviting a gentle calm into our day. Whether you’re in the city enjoying one of the many green spaces, at the lake, near a river or just simply sitting on your front porch listening to the rain (as I am doing while I’m writing this newsletter), nature provides a sanctuary that helps to restore balance in our mind, body and soul.

I wanted to share with you some of my favorite ways to heal in nature. My personal favorite is to take my meditation practice outdoors, either with a mindful walk or a seated meditation in a calm serene setting. Whether you take a walk-in a nearby park or nature trail, or if you’re lucky enough to live in the forest, as you walk focus your senses on your surroundings, the sound of the birds, the colors all around you, and the feelings of the warm sun and gentle breeze on your face. Also, I like to add a mantra on the “In breath”, of either “Be here and now” or “ I am” such as “I am this path”, “I am this forest”, “I am the robin”, so whatever you’re noticing or experiencing, declare that you are one, that there is no separation. On your “out” breath, release all that you are not, for you are not your stressors, your anxiety, or other’s perceptions. Repeat, as often as you are inclined to, and enjoy the experience of a regulated nervous system. There is neuroscientific research that supports this practice as an effective means of managing depression and anxiety.

Whether your practice is meditation, yoga, journaling, card reading, eft or reiki take your practice outdoors. Stand barefoot on grass or sand, feeling the earth beneath your feet, take a refreshing swim in the lake and experience your practice near water and feel your body and soul being nourished by mother earth. Meditation and journaling by moving water has profoundly enhanced my practice and is a beautiful reminder to just go with what flows, rather than fighting the flow.

Let go of any distractions and immerse yourself in the present moment, by connecting your movement with your breath. Simply notice the colors, the sounds, and feelings and breathe them deeply into your own energy system, becoming more aware that they are not separate from you, but rather they are you. Visualize the energy of the earth flowing through you, grounding and balancing your spirit. Remember to bow with gratitude when you have completed your practice, to show reverence and appreciation. The feelings of peace and calm you experience within yourself is also generated for all beings everywhere without exception.

If you have mobility issues, you can still enjoy all of the same, simply from the comfort of your own yard or deck. Our outdoor spaces are an extension of our being, and the simple act of enjoying and loving this space is an act of self-love.

I read this the other day “If you want evidence that the world is a terrible place, watch the news and surf the web. But if you want to remember how incredible this planet is, go outside and be in nature.” I for one will be tuning out of all the continuous media noise that creates anger and agitation and tuning into all that creates beauty, softness, and calm.

I’d love to hear from you and see your pictures of you enjoying nature whether it’s a photo from your outdoor meditation, reflections on a nature walk or just a story of how nature has supported your healing journey. For all that reply I will put your name in for a draw for a complimentary reiki session, to be enjoyed before the end of summer.

I’ve included a summer meditation for you, I hope you all enjoy it! I have no fixed schedule this summer, just winging it, hoping to catch up with friends and family, and to relax in some of my favorite outdoor spaces. If you’d like a session, just send me a message and I’m sure we can find a date that works for us both, maybe we’ll even have your Reiki session in my back yard.

Let’s all try to turn off the news and put down our devices and allow this summer to be a season of embracing nature’s healing gifts. Remember to take time for yourself, breathe deeply and enjoy the beauty around you.

Wishing you all a rejuvenating and restorative summer!
