A NEW NORMAL

A GRIEVING MOTHER’S JOURNEY FROM LOSS TO HEALING

Mothers who have lived through the death of a child understand one another like nobody else possibly can; they have a connection at a primal level. What’s more, the death of your child is an unnatural order of life events, causing a daily struggle to make sense of it.

In her book A New Normal, Loralee Scobie shares one mother’s account of learning to live again following the accidental death of her twenty-four-year-old daughter, Sara. Writing from her soul, describing how she came to sit with her grief and not run from it and, in doing so, began to heal. Loralee shares journal entries from three years of writing to her deceased daughter. Though she didn’t realize it at the time, writing began the process of finding her new normal. This is not a how-to-book or an explanation of the stages of grief; rather, it is a peek inside a mother’s broken heart and what it took to move through all the feelings that accompany loss.

I wanted to thank you so much for your beautiful book, A New Normal. I have read it in the past few weeks, read it slowly so I could digest the beautiful writing. John Neville on the Bird Songs of the Boreal Forest describes the Hermit Thrush’s song as “achingly beautiful”. Your book was that. Thank you for sharing your journey and for gifting a book to us. Many hugs to you.

We lost a son to a car accident in 2013. He was 45. Your book was incredible. I cried for you and me. Your feelings are and were so much like mine. I would think OMG that’s exactly how I felt or feel. It’s a great book for us going through it and our close family and friends to understand us. We too have 3 children, 1 in heaven. we will always have 3 children. And I too didn’t take any medication cause I felt it just prolongs the grief. Thanks so much for writing this book.

I went to go read one chapter and ended up finishing the book in one sitting. An honest book about losing a child. I feel anyone could benefit from reading this book, as it gives insight as to what’s happening to a mother whose lost a child, and what we as supporters can do.

First I would like to extend my condolences on the loss of your beautiful daughter Sara. Another young life take way too soon! I wanted to tell you I received your book from a friend, and have just finished it. I wanted to congratulate you on being able to articulate and share such sorrow and grief. We lost our son Drew, the summer of 2006 and he would have been 25 that fall, the same age as Sara. I have always wanted to write a book sharing this horrible journey but have never been able to, so I thank you for doing it for me. The words you wrote could have been mine, word for word.
